Estonia has always held an important geographical position as a gateway between east and west and has consequently suffered from almost continuous occupation. Independence was achieved briefly before World War II but after invasion by Germany and Russia it took until 1991 until the country was finally free.
Maie Barrow will outline the history of Estonia, and describe post-war migration, with emphasis on Australia, Terry Kass wil tell the fascinating story of Australia’s first known Estonian Julius Sickler and Kulliki Poole will describe the intricacies of Estonian handicrafts.
After morning tea view a display of personal possessions of an Estonian couple who escaped before the war in the presence of their daughter Lisa Cotterill, and inspect samples of Estonian handicrafts.
