Young Estonians in Australia have until 3 September 2026 to apply for the Estonian Worldwide Youth Network’s Youth Delegate Program — and this time, there’s an option designed with our part of the world in mind.
If you’re aged 16–35, live outside Estonia and would like to meet other young Estonians around the world, make new connections and get more involved in the global Estonian community, the Estonian Worldwide Youth Network (ÜENV) would quite like to meet you.
This year, participants can choose an English-language program with meeting times better suited to Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region (no 1 am Zoom meetings, yay!). An Estonian-language program aligned with European and US time zones is also available.
So, what does a youth delegate actually do?
The five-month program runs from September to January, bringing together young Estonians living in different countries to meet, exchange experiences and build connections across the global Estonian community. Along the way, delegates also get the chance to share what life looks like for young Estonians in their own corner of the world.
Delegates join monthly online meetings and a shared WhatsApp community, exchange experiences and help connect other young people with information and opportunities. They also choose a communications focus: creating social media content or writing articles for the Global Estonian website — or, for the particularly enthusiastic, doing both.
The commitment is estimated at around five hours per month, and the role can be adjusted to participants’ time and interests. Each delegate also receives a contact person who can help with everything from questions to brainstorming content. Fluent Estonian is not a requirement. Everyone is welcome.
The first Youth Delegate Program brought together 15 young Estonians from nine countries, giving participants a ready-made international network of people navigating their own versions of Estonian life abroad. They explored topics ranging from diaspora life and journalism to inclusion. The participants also helped establish youth communities in Austria, Germany and Denmark.
The idea behind the program is simple: there is no single way to experience being Estonian abroad. Different relationships with language, culture, community and identity are part of the story — and ÜENV wants young people themselves to help tell it.
The first online meeting of the new round is planned for 26 or 27 September, with monthly activities continuing through January.
