Gold Coast Estonian School & Playroom

Gold Coast Estonian School and Playroom | Gold Coasti Eesti Kool ja Mängutuba

The Gold Coast Estonian Children’s Playgroup is where language, laughter and the occasional farm animal come together — catering to kids aged 0–6 years, and often attracting the whole family (yes, even the dads!). With 10–20 little ones at most sessions — and more than 20 when summer rolls around — it’s more than just a playgroup; it’s a mini Estonian festival twice a month.

Held every other Sunday at the Varsity Lakes Community Centre, the sessions are full of colour and movement. Children sing Estonian songs, play games, get crafty, and dive into free play while their parents catch up (or quietly hum along to Karumõmmi unelaul). The centre is spacious and toy-stocked, so most kids are in no rush to leave when class wraps up.

The playgroup also puts on special excursions and events a few times a year — think fruit farms, hikes, picnics, and nature adventures where gumboots meet Estonian vowels. Larger seasonal celebrations like Christmas and Easter draw 25–30 kids and up to 60 people once you count the grownups, strollers and snack baskets.

The group is led by the ever‑cheerful Kätriin Vinkmann and Carmelina Kannelmäe, with support from an all-star team of parent assistants: Elina Peedoson, Maren Kosenkranius, and Triinu Türn. The Estonian Institute lends a helping hand to keep things running smoothly each year.

Proof that learning Estonian can involve singing, crafting, and chasing a toddler with half a muffin.
