STOP PRESS

The performances of “Viimane sigar” have been cancelled due to the illness of Agu Endrik Kerge.

Instead we will be treated to a one man show ”An intimate evening with Tõnu Aav”.

Tonu Aav will present excerpts, in Estonian, from a selection of plays.

The times and places of the performances remain as before.

Last Cigar

The play, “ Viimane Sigar” (“Last Cigar”), will be touring Australia in February and March. It will be presented in Estonian, with 4 talented actors from Estonia. Last Cigar is a comedy, even though it is about real problems encountered along life’s journey. Where does love go? After forty two years of marriage, the school principal confides to his friend that he should have separated when the children left home. Now it would be embarrassing. His pastor friend thinks there must still be something left that would keep them together.

VIIMANE SIGAR

LAVASTUSE TUTVUSTUS

“Viimane sigar” on tegelikult komöödia, kuigi räägib meile tõsistest probleemidest, mis saadavad meid pikal eluteel. Kuhu kaob armastus? Metslinnud lendavad.”

Learn Estonian in Estonia – Tallinn Winter School Jan 2010

0

Tallinn Winter Language School

Across the globe there are millions of people who speak English, but only one million speak Estonian. The language is part of the Finno-Ugric group, and is related to Finnish and Hungarian. Tallinn University’s course in the Estonian Language offers an opportunity to study an unusual and entrancing language right here against the backdrop of a well-preserved medieval city. The course aims to familiarize a wide range of international students not only with the Estonian language, but also with the country’s rich culture, history, art, literature and lifestyle.

After an informal short written test, the students will be divided into groups based on their initial proficiency in the Estonian language.

The courses will then foster skills at the following levels:

Beginner – students will develop basic Estonian communication skills and master day-to-day conversation. The course programme includes pronunciation practice, listening comprehension and easy communication.
Intermediate – students will further develop their speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills. The students should be familiar with basic Estonian structures. The course programme includes activities based on various everyday situations.

The languages of instruction are Estonian and English and the course materials are distributed during the course.

In the afternoons following the language classes, special lectures and discussions will take place, delving into aspects of Estonian culture, history, art, music and traditions. Students will be presented with material that not only reviews and analyses Estonia’s past, but also its present social and political situation.

Participants

The course is suitable for students of all levels of competence in the Estonian language, from complete beginners with no practical experience to conversationally capable speakers.

The number of classes equals 60 hours.

Course fee

390 EUR or 6100 EEK

Recommendations

“From my own point of view, as a half-Aussie half-Esto with very little prior Estonian language experience, it was one of the best things I’ve ever done. There is also the opportunity to participate in a cultural experience program in the afternoons; the language lessons are in the morning.”

“In essence it’s a course that runs from the 4th of January to the 24th; 15 days, for 4 hours a day. The course suits beginners through to more capable speakers, and is very worthwhile; I had a great deal of fun, and learnt a lot, in the summer course. The cost is 390 EU or 6100 EEK, and dormitory accommodation can be provided by the university for a reasonable price.”
