The Estonian Association of Tasmania (Tasmaania Eesti Selts), founded in 1951, historically provided a cultural anchor for Estonia-born and Estonian-descended residents of Hobart and beyond – meeting around four times a year for Independence Day, Christmas and the occasional gathering at private homes – with Tiiu Rääbus (trraabus@gmail.com) listed as a key point of contact. However, recent reports from the Council of Estonian Societies of Australia note that the organisation has announced closing. Local news from early 2024 confirmed the last known major community event: a combined Annual General Meeting and barbecue held by the Tasmanian Estonian Association on Independence Day. Since then, there’s been no public record of further gatherings, classes, or events in Tasmania for 2024–25.
Tasmaania Eesti Selts may still exist in name and remains affiliated with AESL, but to our knowledge it’s currently inactive, with no regularly scheduled activities (if you know of any meetups or activities of Estonians in Tasmania, please email us). There’s no evidence of ongoing choirs, folk dance groups, language classes, or cultural events in Tasmania at present. For anyone holding Estonian heritage in Tasmania today, the best path to staying connected is via AESL and mainland societies, or by reaching out directly to Tiiu Rääbus. They may provide insight or help reconnect the community when interest resurges.
