30-year old Kertu (Ursula Ratasepp) has lived under her father’s watchful eye her whole life. Because of her gentle nature, she is thought by locals to be a little simple-minded. Believing otherwise, the young woman makes her first timid attempt to change something in her life – she sends a postcard to Villu (Mait Malmsten), a handsome but degenerate village drunk.
During Mid-summers Day, Kertu goes missing without a trace. Her family panics.
After a long search, the trembling Kertu is found hiding under the bed of the liquor-loving womaniser Villu.
The judgemental villagers chastise Villu and accuse him of taking advantage of the woman. But what had really happened that night?
The slowly unravelling truth is more shocking than anyone could ever imagine.
Whilst not enjoying the success of his other film “A Lady in Paris’, ‘Kertu’ is another film from arguably Estonias most successful director, Ilmar Raag that has crept under the radar until now.
Beautifully shot in the breezy coastal villages of Estonia, this film will leave you satisfied Ilmar has not lost his touch to tell a story.
