‘The Day I Grew Up’ – (G) 2008
A short film by Martti Helde

18:30 – 19:00

Priidik is a young boy alone.

Priidik’s dad, a single parent, disapproves of what he thinks is Priidik’s boundless imagination and does his best to prepare Priidik for his first day of school and to grow up a little.

When visiting Priidik’s mothers father (his grandpa), Priidik accidentally finds an old book in his grandpa’s antique shop. One that can magically fix things.

After realising the power the book yields, he decides to use the book to revive a dead butterfly who was killed due to his fathers inattention.

The first day of school arrives and without his dad’s knowing, Priidik wishes to say good-bye to his lost mum and passing childhood with the help of the book.
‘The Day I Grew Up’ is a heart warming story of letting go and is beautifully shot.

Starring: Rain Simmul , Erik Toomet-Björck, Aarne Üksküla

‘Uus Maailm’ – (New World) (M) 2011 **CURRENTLY SHOWING IN ESTONIA**

A documentary film by Jaan Tootsen
Story by Jaak Kilmi (Disco and Atomic War)

19:30 – 21:00

‘New World’ is a thoroughly entertaining documentary shot over 4 years recording the events of the New World Society that took place in Kesklinn, Tallinn.
The story involves a bunch of young idealistic types who decide they want to start an NGO (non-government organisation) so they can turn back the clock a little and make their neck of the woods car free. And hopefully care-free.

By doing so they hope to take control of their part of society, the part usually neglected by politicians and big business, and change the feel and attitude of where they live from a primp-n-proper up-and-coming neighborhood where no one really talks to each other, to one that is a little more loose where everybody knows everyone’s business, but get along.

Or as car free as possible.

After gaining some initial exposure and funding from the government, ‘New World’ was the name given to the area where the story takes place, in a house-come-community drop-in center.

But like all things (business), the community becomes dependent on the governments funding as it seems everyone wants to be a part of the party, but no one wants to pay for the party.

To get the house running requires bottomless energy and a drive (usually reserved for selfish and immature teenagers) to meet the ultimate objective which is set by the stories main character Erko Valk.

Whilst he is the nucleus of the story, it’s the stories of the other people around him that become interesting in the quest to meet Erko’s objectives, as well as the ensuing internal conflicts which occur because of his style of leadership.

Starring: Toomas Hendrik Ilves (as el-Presidente)

The start of summer was celebrated in the Estonian Club on 1 December. We have had busy club nights during last few months and it seems to be getting even busier.

In October we had an Estralian Bushdance with live music from Bruce and Haruna. The Club has never been so packed. All the people didn’t fit in and some had to enjoy our bushdance from outside. Later in the evening everyone came out to dance – even the chef and the baker-girl. We will have to hold the next Bushdance in the big hall. The next big event will be the Estonian Club’s Christmas party with Estralian Bushdance on the 22-nd of December. We will sing some Christmas carols and we expect Santa to attend as well. Anyone who doesn’t
have a family or friends to share Christmas with is welcome to drop presents for their friends or for the E-Club team into Santa’s bag. The E-Club team has prepared a nice Christmas present for all our fans which is on sale for only $8 per item. During December everyone will have an opportunity to buy gingerbread dough made by our head baker Merka.

Sydney hosts the next Estonian Festival in Australia in December 2012

Interview with Peeter Muttik, the head of Eesti
Päevad.

The XXIV Eesti Päevad Estonian Festival will take place in Sydney at
the end of 2012, what will be the highlight?

Peeter Muttik, the head of Eesti Päevad: The highlight will be the
opportunity for people of all ages to experience Estonian culture in a wide
variety of forms ranging from traditional to contemporary. The programme devised
by the organising committee includes choral music, theatre, folk dancing and
music, performances aimed at kids, contemporary rock and jazz. We are not
intending to run this festival on the „business as usual” principle. We are
aware that we are competing for the entertainment-cultural dollar in a
competetive market and propose to offer an interesting programme of quality
events.

**CHANGE OF MAIN FEATURE FILM FOR FRIDAY THE 16TH OF DECEMBER**

Due to the sudden and totally unexpected arrival of our special guest on the same day of our next KiNO! night, the main feature documentary/drama we will be showing in our guests honour will be ‘August 1991‘.

“Who is this special guest we write of?”, we here you ask. Well, in a MAJOR coup for KiNO! (and after a few hasty emails…) we feel privileged to announce that Ilmar Raag will pull himself out of jet-lagged sleep to come and say ‘tere!’ to our appreciative KiNO! audience. Ilmar is an Estonian film script-writer and director (Klass 2007 – which screened at the Sydney Film Festival), ex-head of ETV in Tallinn, Ööülikool lecturer-contributor (for Vikerr Raadio) and all round know-all of Estonian film. Whether Ilmar will stay around to watch ‘August 1991‘ for the ‘000th time, we don’t know, but we do intend to hold a little Q&A before we roll the films for the night.

Whether you have or haven’t seen ‘August 1991‘ before, don’t miss out because aside from watching a great documentary/drama on the re-birth of Estonia, this is an extremely rare opportunity to not only meet the director of the film, but listen to one of the truly influential people of Estonian entertainment and one of the few people in Estonian putting film out there and on the map.

We will still be showing ‘Shift’ before ‘August 1991‘ as well as offering the regular drinks and delicious nibblies. Who know’s, there might even be a surprise in the fridge if were lucky…

As usual, doors open at 6pm. See you there

Sobering enough?

The main message reads: “Ka mõõdukas alkoholitarvitamine
(Even moderate alcohol consumption) KURNAB organismi (compromises / exhausts the system) ja SOODUSTAB haiguste teket” (and promotes / contributes to the inception of disease).

Information on amounts consumed, effects, precautions, facts, particularly
for young people and where to get help can be found at a new website (www.alkoinfo.ee).

This is important news to drive home to Estonians. In case they
were in denial. “Meil on ka üheksa diagnoosi, kus sõna “alkohol” on juba tõve
nimes sees,” märkis Jesse. – “We have nine diagnoses, in which the word alcohol
is part of the disease name,” notes Jesse. One of them being alkohoolne
kardiomüopaatia or “alcohol-related” cardiomyopathy; heart muscle disease caused
by alcohol toxicity.

WE COULDN’T MEET THE MINISTER BECAUSE…

Sunday, November 20th, we had a prior invitation which we
just could not refuse. We had been invited by the Danish Ministry of Foreign
Affairs to a barbeque at Garden Island, with the hope of seeing the visiting
young Danish royals.

Dress code was definitely business suits, so no palazzo pyjamas or
designer-torn jeans. A specially chartered ferry-sized vessel picked us and the
other “chosen” ones from the Harbour Master Steps in front of the Museum of
Contemporary Art and carried us to the harbourside entry to Garden Island. Don’t
think you can do this in your private yacht or row-boat. There are men there to
politely discourage you from doing anything so foolhardy. In fact, all
participant were well known and documented.
