Estonian animation at the UTS: Sydney International Animation Festival

UTS Sydney International Animation Festival 2009
Title: Estonian animation at the UTS: Sydney International Animation Festival
Date: 2009-09-05
Location: University of Technology Sydney
Link out: Program and ticketing information
Description: Estonian animation exclusive to UTS: Sydney International Animation Festival

While it might come as a surprise to many, Estonia’s animation community ranks among the best in the world, and Sydneysiders will have the chance to experience some of the best at the UTS: Sydney International Animation Festival on Saturday 5 September.

life-without-gabriel-ferri-priit-parnExclusive to UTS: SIAF is Priit Parn’s latest film, Life Without Gabriel Ferri, a dramatic story about love, locked doors, a faceless thief, a wounded stork, a lost laptop and the O’Key sisters who turn out to be virtual prostitutes.

“Among the stable of sublimely talented animators that work in Estonia, Priit Parn is the acknowledged master. His brilliance lies in his ability to reach deeper than most others into the very bedrock of our social strata,” said Malcolm Turner, UTS: SIAF co-director.

“As a chronicler of this world’s foibles and collective foolishnesses, he is virtually without peer. Life Without Gabriel Ferri carries on this tradition.”

Benefiting from the strong tradition of Eastern European animation accompanied by a humorous view of European consumer society, Estonian animators have forged a unique graphic signature accompanied by absurdism and playfulness in both content and form.

“The best Estonian animated films plumb extraordinary depths of whatever issues they take on. Most pursue some of mankind’s most elemental issues, fears and desires. At the same time, the often deftly carry the weight of having to work as intricately coded political dissertations – for those with eyes to see,” said Turner.

This program showcases some early, groundbreaking Estonian films, looks at the best works by the emerging generation and closes with Priit Parn’s latest work.

It includes work by Heono Pars, Priit Tender, Ulo Pikkov and Mait Laas.

When the Noise Had Ended Geislingen's DP Children Remember

“The youngest victims of WWII search their memories to tell how they
and their families escaped the Red Army to find refuge in a displaced persons’
camp in post-war Germany – more than 60 years ago. Sometimes horrifying, often
unflinchingly honest, their stories and intimate photographs offer glimpses of a
brave but artificial world – through the eyes of the very small.”

What is happening with the Estonian Language – Experts to discuss in Australia, July 2009

0

28384263_db339c7ee0In July several Estonian language experts will be coming to Australia to talk about What is happening with the Estonian Language. All who can understand the language, are invited to participate in the seminars.

One can talk a lot about Estonian – one of the most pleasant sounding languages,  but only with a small number of speakers. Some have heartache about this, whereas others could not care less.

A language keeps living, as long as it is used, is thought about and cared for. There are many   scientist in the world, who are researching and caring about Estonian, even here, in Australia. To remember the importance of Estonian, it has become traditional both in Estonia and abroad to reserve specific days devoted to discussing the language. For the first time it is also happening in Australia.

For that occasion six known Estonian language specialists are visiting: Dr Mati Erelt, Professor Emeritus of the University of Tartu is going to talk about the changing language, Annika Kilgi, a doctorate student will speak about the language used by the youth and an experienced language teacher and teaching materials specialist Leeelo Kingisepp is going to introduce materials for teaching Estonian abroad. Dr Helle Metslang, a Professor of Estonian and the Head of the Institute of General Lingustics at the University of Tartu will cover what is easy and what is difficult in Estonian, one of the compilers of the Dictionary of Correct Use, Maire Raadik will describe new words in Estonian and Dr. Jüri Valge from the Estonian Ministry of Education and Science will make a prognosis of the future of Estonian.

Prof. Mati Erelt Annika Kilgi Leelo Kingisepp Prof. Helle Metslang Prof. Maire Raadik Dr. Juri Valge

There will be specific gatherings for this at:
* The Estonian House in Melbourne, 43 Melville St, West Brunswick, on Sunday, July 19, at 13.00.
* The Estonian House in Sydney, 141 Campbell St, Darlinghurst, on Thursday, July 23, at 11.00
* The Estonian Village Hall, Estonian Rd, Thirlmere, on Friday, July 24, at 14.00.
* The Estonian Lutheran Church Hall, 11 Waratah St, North Strathfield, on Saturday, July 25, at 10.30.

The program at the Estonian House in Sydney and the Estonian Village at Thirlmere will be different and shorter from that at Melbourne and the Church Hall.

All are invited!

Coordinator of Estonian Studies of the Australian Council of Estonian Societies.

Kuidas elad, armas eesti keel?

Juulikuus tulevad Austraaliasse eesti keeleteadlased siinsetele eestlastele sellest rääkima.

Sel puhul külastavad meid kuus tuntud eesti keele teadlast:

1. Filoloogiadoktor, Tartu Ulikooli emeriitprofessor Mati Erelt, kes räägib teemal “Mida eestlane ütleb teistmoodi kui varem”.

2. Filoloogiamagister, Tallinna Ülikooli lektor ja keeleteaduse doktorant Annika Kilgi, kelle ettekande pealkiri on “Eesti noored ja eesti keel”.

3. Filoloogiamagister Leelo Kingisepp, kes on töötanud eesti, soome ja inglise keele õpetajana tutvustab välisõppeks sobivaid eesti keele õppematerjale.

4. Filosoofiadoktor, Tartu Ülikooli professor, eesti ja üldkeeleteaduse instituudi juhataja Helle Metslang kõneleb teemal “Eesti keel: lihtne ja keerukas”.

5. Eesti Keele Instituudi vanemkeelekorraldaja, ühe õigekeelsusõnaraamatu koostaja Maire Raadiku ettekanneteks on “Uued sõnad eesti keeles” ja “Inglise ja vene mõjud eesti sõnavaras” (Sydney kirikusaalis).

6. Filoloogiakandidaat (PhD), Haridus- ja Teadusministeeriumi keeleosakonna nõunik Jüri Valge räägib teemadel “Eestikeelse tuleviku nimel” ja “Eesti keel ja eestlus muutuvas ajas”(Sydney kirikusaalis).

Kokkutulekud toimuvad:

* Melbourne’i Eesti Majas, 43 Melville St., West Brunswick, pühapäeval, 19. juulil, algusega kell 13.00 (täiskava),

* Sydney Eesti Majas, 141 Campbell St. Darlinghurst, neljapäeval, 23. juulil,Seenioride Koondise kokkutulekul, algusega kell 11.00 (lühendkava),

* Thirlmere’i Eesti Küla saalis, Estonian Rd., Thirlmere, reedel, 24. juulil,Huviringi kokkutulekul, algusega kell 14.00 (lühendkava),

* Sydney eesti kirikusaalis, 11 Waratah St., North Strathfield, laupäeval, 25. juulil, algusega 10.30 (täiskava)

Sydney Eesti Maja ja Thirlmere kavad on lühemad ja erinevad Melbourne’is ja Sydney kirikusaalis toimuvast programmist.

Kõik on oodatud!

Tiiu Salasoo,
AES Liidu eesti keele õpingute koordineerija
