South Australia may not host the largest Estonian population in Australia, but the community rooted in Adelaide is vibrant, historic and proudly engaged. According to the 2016 census, close to 200 South Australians were Estonia‑born and almost 400 identified as having Estonian ancestry – a number built on decades of emigration dating back to post‑World War II.
🏛️ Community hubs & societies
The heart of Estonian culture beats strongest at Adelaide Estonian Society headquartered at the Estonian House (200 Jeffcott Street, North Adelaide). The Society publishes monthly newsletters, runs Estonian language classes, a movie club, and hosts casual bar nights, Eurovision viewings and Oktoberfest celebrations. It also sponsors Vikerkaar, the Australian Estonian folk dancing group, and Hapu Koor, a mixed choir.
🎉 Cultural events
Most recently, the 29th Eesti Päevad took place in Adelaide from 27–31 December 2024, drawing Estonians and friends together for music, dance, food and shared memories festival.eesti.org.au.
