Key insights
- This month, we commemorated the Baltic Deportations of 1941. Baltic communities in Melbourne and Sydney came together to remember the pain of our ancestors.
- On June 4, Estonians celebrated the 140th birthday of the tricolour Estonian Flag.
- Great news from the Australian Council of Estonian Societies (AESL): the original funding target in Australia for the Estonian Diaspora project to create a place of remembrance was achieved! In light of such positive support from our community, AESL are welcoming further donations before July 31 to ensure the memorial will be created and erected by September this year.
- Sydney was all about television in June — Australian Estonians in Surry Hills are sought for an ancestry TV show and Lachlan Bell hosted his final kino! night prior to his departure to Estonia.
- In Victoria, film was also celebrated: a short film “Cement” by Estonian Director Eva Otsing is part of this year’s Top Short Films Competition and the 40th anniversary of the St Kilda Film Festival.
