The Sydney Estonian Craft Group SESKKE have started a Folk Costume Library, where people lend or donate their old Estonian Costumes for people to borrow and wear on various occasions. We are delighted and grateful to all those who have already lended or donated their costumes and are looking to build our library further. Each item is numbered, named by the donator/lender, and catalogued for easy tracking. Always happy to return items to the original owner at any time.
If you would like to be part of the biggest collection of Estonian Folk Costumes in Australia, borrow items for a range of occasions such as independence day or choir performances, or find out more information, please contact Maie Pikkat at maiepikkat at bigpond.com

Composer and pianist Rein Rannap was born in Tallinn, Estonia, in the family of professional musicians. Already as a child he demonstrated his extraordinary musical talent, beginning to play piano – and also improvise – as well as compose long before the school age.
Rannap started his musical upbringing as a classical pianist, studying first in Tallinn – at the Musical High School and Conservatory, and then at the Moscow Conservatory (Master’s degree). As a composer, he remained, for a while, an autodidact; later he acquired master’s and doctoral degrees in musical composition from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Both as a composer and pianist, Rannap has always been notorious for his ability to mix different genres. His post-modernist works in classical idiom are a genuine cross-over, noticeably influenced by popular music, thus making it very fascinating to the wider audience. Rannap has composed all kind of music: symphonic, band, chamber, choral, for film and theater etc.; but more than anything else has he written popular songs, and – of course for the piano. His works, and frequently also his performances, have been recorded on many CDs and LPs.
Rannap has performed in most of the European countries, in most of major cities of USA, China, Canada, Australia and former Soviet Union, repeatedly in Germany (including numerous festivals) and Russia, but also in Japan, Uruguay and Cuba.
His emphasis was earlier mostly on songwriting and performing classical music. Now is his center of gravity on composing, mainly for classical set ups – less or more – serious music. And as a pianist, he commits now only to performing his own works and his improvisational arrangements of well-known to everybody melodies, mostly of classical origin.
In his homeland Estonia, there literally isn’t anybody, who wouldn’t know Rannap. In addition to being acknowledged as a piano player, Rannap is glorious as a leader of, and songwriter for the most popular rock group ever in Estonia – Ruja; likewise, as a longtime jury member of the Estonian version of internationally known TV contest formats: Pop Idol or X Factor. Many of his popular and rock songs have become evergreens, and are still actively performed by the young artists, and also, for example, regularly by huge choirs (consisting up to 30 000 singers) at Estonian Songfests.

Arkaader English VOD platform is now live, inviting cinephiles, estophiles and the Estonian diaspora worldwide to discover and rediscover Estonian film legacy at www.arkaader.ee
Arkaader.ee, a video-on-demand platform dedicated to showcasing Estonian film heritage celebrated its first year with opening of the English version of the platform for the international viewers. The platform was brought to life in collaboration between National Archives of Estonia and the Estonian Film Institute to provide easy access to the treasure trove of Estonian cinema.
Arkaader.ee is the most diverse Estonian film streaming platform, that makes nation’s film heritage permanently available in all its genres: restored old classics and new feature films released from cinema distribution, plenty of acclaimed Estonian animation, short films worth discovering, student films, amateur films, commercials, video art, newsreels, and documentaries from the past and present. In the first year of operation, 3,300 audiovisual works have been made available on Arkaader.
The film vault lets viewers explore films by genre, while the timeline view shows evolution of Estonian cinema from the days of the pioneers to contemporary film scene. Carefully curated collections lead the way to thematic journeys and a film map helps discover feature films and newsreels by shooting locations.
The new English-language view of the portal makes a rich selection of Estonian film archives easily accessible to international film enthusiasts and enables the descendants of Estonians living abroad to strengthen their connection with the Estonian language and culture through the medium of film.
Eesti filmipärandiportaal Arkaader nüüd ka inglise keeles
13. detsembril täitus Rahvusarhiivi ja Eesti Filmi Instituudi loodud veebiplatvormil Arkaader.ee esimene tegutsemisaasta, selle tähistamiseks avanes rahvusvahelise vaataja poolt oodatud platvormi ingliskeelne vaade.
Arkaader.ee on mitmekesiseim eesti filmi voogedastusplatvorm, mis teeb püsivalt kättesaadavaks meie filmipärandit selle kogu ulatuses: restaureeritud vanu klassikuid ja kinolevist väljunud uusi filme, rohkelt animatsiooni, avastamisväärset vähemtuntud lühifilmide seast ning tudengifilme, harrastusfilme, reklaamfilme, videokunsti, dokumentaalfilme minevikust ja kaasajast ning kroonikapalu ajaloohuvilistele. Arkaadrisse on esimese tegutsemisaastaga jõudnud juba 3300 audiovisuaalteost.
The AESL (Council of Estonian Societies in Australia, Inc) is proud of the work of the Estonian Archives in Australia over many decades, and for the recent award from Estonia’s Foreign Ministry.
We also congratulate Naomi Cooper and Marissa Pikkat on their awards
Foreign Ministry recognises citizen diplomats on Citizen’s Day 26.11.2023 | 10:16
Today, 26 November or Citizen’s Day, the Foreign Ministry recognises citizen diplomats and NGOs for their significant contribution to advancing Estonian language, culture and business in the world. This year, the Foreign Ministry is presenting 40 letters of appreciation.
“Estonia’s greatest wealth is our people. Today, I would like to thank the dedicated and inspiring people who are preserving Estonian cultural identity and raising Estonia’s profile across the world. During these momentous times in foreign policy and security, it is good to know that Estonia’s voice remains strong and we are standing on solid ground,” Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is issuing letters of appreciation for citizen diplomacy on Citizen’s Day for the fourteenth time. The letter is presented to individuals or non-governmental organisations who have made long and notable efforts to preserve Estonian language, culture and spirit, or promoted Estonia’s business environment, digital society and business culture on a voluntary basis, thus contributing to raising Estonia’s profile in their country of residence.
The Citizen’s Day is celebrated on 26 November because on this day in 1918, the Estonian Provincial Assembly issued its first regulation on Estonian citizenship. The aim of the Citizen’s Day is to raise awareness about the status of a citizen and increase civic pride.
The Foreign Ministry would like to thank and recognise the following individuals and non-governmental organisations:

Möödunud teisipäeval, 10. oktoobril lahkus meie armas Brisbane’i Eesti Selti kauaaegne eestvedaja Tiina Taemets. Vaid mõned päevad varem, 5. oktoobril, sai Tiina 92-aastaseks.
Brisbane’i kolis 26-aastane Tiina Sydneyst 1957. aastal. Tiina oli eestlaste kogukonna aktiivne liige ning ta seisis eestluse eest kogu Brisbane’is elatud aja jooksul. Muuhulgas juhendas Tiina palju aastaid Brisbane’i rahvatantsugruppi.
Selts olgu justkui teise kodu eest!”
Käsikäes teiste rahvuste esindajatega osales Tiina aktiivselt Ikestatud Rahvuste Komitees: ta vôitles väsimatult selle eest, et Eesti ja teised Nôukogude Liidu poolt okupeeritud riigid pääseksid kommunismi ikke alt.
Tubli töö eest autasustas president Lennart Meri 2001.a. veebruaris Tiinat Valgetähe teenetemärgiga.
Tiina, aitäh kõige eest, mis Sa meile andsid. Puhka rahus! Brisbane’i Eesti Selts

In Memoriam – Tiina Taemets
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Tiina Taemets on 10 October. Just a few days earlier, on 5 October, Tiina had her 92nd birthday.
Tiina moved from Sydney to Brisbane in 1957, at 26 years old. It did not take long for Tiina to become a key figure in the local Brisbane Estonian community. She was dedicated to promoting Estonian culture and led the local Estonian fold dance group for many years.
In 1976 Tiina was elected the President of Brisbane Estonian Society, a position she held with exceptional devotion, energy, and love for 26 years. In Tiina’s own words: “The Estonian Society should be cherished in the heart so that people want to return over and over again. It should feel like a second home!”
Tiina was an active participant in the Committee of Occupied Nations (Ikestatud Rahvuste Komitee). She fought tirelessly for the liberation of Estonia and other countries occupied by the Soviet Union from the yoke of communism.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions, President Lennart Meri awarded Tiina with the Order of the White Star (Valgetähe teenetemärk) in February 2001.
Tiina, thank you for everything you gave us. Rest in peace! Brisbane Estonian Society
“The Invisible Fight” is premiering in Australia next week in Sydney & Mebourne.
Zen meets zany with a 70s kung fu flair, laughs aplenty and a sonic assault of Black Sabbath in filmmaker Rainer Sarnet’s funkadelic film about an orthodox Russian, on a warrior’s journey to become a martial arts master.
USSR-China border, 1973. Rafael, is in the army on guard duty when the border falls under attack from flying Chinese kung fu warriors. Utterly fascinated by the long-haired Chinese hippie black-clad kung fu aces flying around blasting forbidden Black Sabbath music from their portable radio Rafael gets struck by a revelation; he too wants to become a kung fu warrior. Faith leads Rafael to an Orthodox monastery where the black-clad monks do their training but his road to achieving the almighty power of humility required is long, winding and full of kick-ass adventures.
