KiNO! #10! @ Estonian House Sydney on Friday, the 31st of August!

On the program this month: 18:30 – 19:00
‘külm on’ (Burnt Mistakes) – [M] 2010

Genre: Drama

Aggivald, 23, is living in a suburban boiler-house that is fuelled by books – books without endings. The biggest passion for the young man is to write a new ending for each book. Aggivald doesn’t know that his family has a story of its own, a story that reaches back to the Soviet time and has no ending either – (imdb.com)

Director: Martti Helde
Staring: Gert Raudsep

—————————————————————————–

19:00 – 19:30
A short intermission where you can grab some finger food and a drink from the bar.

19:30 – 21:30
‘tantsud linnuteele’ (Dances Under the Milky Way) – [R] 2010

Genre: Documentary

This documentary is a retrospective homage to one of the greatest Estonians of all time who spent his adult life in a constant search for the roots of his kin.
Writer and filmmaker Lennart Meri (1929–2006) was the President of the Republic of Estonia in 1992 – 2001.
This film deals only with Lennart Meri’s cinematic oeuvre. It looks at the cultural and social background of his anthropological films: The Waterfowl People (1970)
The Winds of the Milky Way (1977)
The Sounds of Kaleva (1985)
The Sons of Torum (1989) and
The Shaman (1997).
With the help of unique archive materials, a brief overview of the difficulties that the Estonian film industry faced during the Soviet era is given – (docpoint.org)

**Kino! considers this part 1 of a 2 part series. Though not directly related, the importance of the subject material in this documentary will hopefully hold the viewer with a clearer picture of another film we hope to show in time – ‘karu süda’ (The Heart of the Bear)**

Director: Jaak Lõhmus
Features: Lennart Meri

Skype and Kazza Founder Jaan Tallinn in Australia

From the Sydney Morning Herald, by Asher Moses

One of the founding engineers of Skype and Kazaa is in Australia to sound a warning to the human race: fasten your seatbelts, as machines are becoming so intelligent that they could pose an existential threat.

Jaan Tallinn argues human-driven technological progress has largely replaced evolution as the dominant force shaping our future. Machines are becoming smarter than we are, but Tallinn warns that if we are not careful this could lead to a “sudden global ecological catastrophe”.

It really sucks to be the number two intelligent species on this planet; you can just ask gorillas, they will go extinct.

Sunday July 1

Victory Day and St John´s day celebrations at Adelaide Estonian House.

For Estonians, Jaanipaev celebratoins were merged with the celebration of Voidupuha (Victory Day) during the War of Independence when Estonian forces defeated the Germa troops on 23 June 1919. After this battle against Estona’s tradtional oppressors, Jaaniohtu and the lighting of the traditional bonfires became lineds with the ideals of independence and freedom.

Kino @ Estonian House Sydney – Friday 27th July

0

The Estonian Film Festival Australia (EFFA) and Sydney Eesti Selts (SES) are proud to present….

KiNO! #10 @ Estonian House Sydney on Friday, the 27th of July!

On the program NEXT month will be a double shot of Estonias director supremo, Veiko Õunpuu. Showing will be his short Tühirand (Empty Beach) followed by his first feature, Sügisball (Autumn Ball). Both stories come from another Estonian genius; the late writer, Mati Unt.

***For those of you who don’t speak Estonian just yet, get ‘Diary of a Blood Donor’ – Mati Unt translated into English – a great read!***

——————————————————————————————–

18:30 – 19:10 ‘Tühirand’ (Empty Beach) – [M] 2006

Genre: Drama

A young intellectual, Mati, engineers himself into a situation where he has to spend a weekend with his wife Helina and her lover Eduard. The trio goes to Eduard’s summer house, surrounded by the majestic scenery of big forests and an empty beach. Mati, either out of jealousy or pride, has decided to win back his wife and will do anything his introverted and inert mind can come up with. What is love? Who can believe in such a thing? Is there anything at all to believe in? It can in its own minimalist way be a very funny experience and also a sad one to be dragged into this world. This film depicts with great accuracy how it is to feel love being an Estonian, someone who is used to low temperatures and repressed emotions. – (IMDB.com)

Shot around the coast of Estonia, Veiko shows his gift of setting up the perfect frame to shoot a scene, all the while delivering a complex story with great and dark humor.

Staring: Rain Tolk, Taavi Eelmaa, Maarja Jakobson

——————————————————————————————–

19:10 – 19:30 A shorter than usual intermission where you can grab some finger food and a drink from the bar

——————————————————————————————–

19:30 – 21:30 ‘Sügisball’ (Autum Ball) – [R] 2007

WARNING: SEX SCENES AND GRAPHIC FRONTAL NUDITY!

Genre: Drama

A young writer called Mati is stalking his ex-wife, while also trying to make unsuccessful passes at other women. August is a barber living a dreary bachelor life who forms a bond with little girl, but his approaches are misconstrued as pedophilia. Laura, a single mom, tears up over sappy soap operas, but refuses real-life advances from clueless men, because her ability to trust has been ruined by her violent drunk of an ex-husband. Maurer, the architect, worries about the wellbeing of humanity, but ignores his own wife Ulvi, who in turn looks for solace in the arms of a coatroom attendant named Theo. Women have always liked Theo, but due to his low social status, they don’t take him seriously. All of these people might inhabit identical tower blocks, but they couldn’t feel more alienated from each other if they tried. – (IMDB.com)

Shot around the Lasnamäe area of Tallinn, Veiko metaphorically captures parts of life that some of us do, and some of us don’t get to see. It’s dark, it’s funny, it’s miserable, it’s brutal, but whatever it is, it truly is the one Estonian film you should see before you die.

Stars: Rain Tolk, Taavi Eelmaa, Juhan Ulfsak
