About Magnus

“My primary wish regarding this film is that, after watching it, people would start paying attention to the things that really matter… like football and shopping.” – filmmaker Kadri Kõusaar

Magnus

The debut feature from 26-year-old writer–director Kadri Kõusaar poses a provocative question: What would you do if your son tells you he would like to die? Due to a terminal illness Magnus (Estonian pop singer Kasearu) is not expected to survive his adolescence, but when he’s unexpectedly cured he can’t find a reason to live. Following a suicide attempt he moves in with his father, who tries in his own unconventional way to provide Magnus with a purpose, and to integrate him into his unorthodox lifestyle.
Magnus provoked controversy upon its release in Estonia, and has been banned in many countries around the world.

Applying for an Estonian passport in Australia 2008

eesti passportIn September this year (2008) a career consul from the Estonian Embassy in Tokyo will be in Sydney for a week. Exact dates to be confirmed later. He will accept passport applications. If you are interested in obtaining an Estonian passport, which is also an EU passport, then please contact the Consulate immediately tel. 02 9810 7468, or via email on estconsyd@bigpond.com

It could take many weeks to obtain the necessary documents to prove Estonian citizenship.

Even those whose Estonian passports are about to expire may wish to take this opportunity to renew their passport. From next year applicants will have to supply finger prints, thus renewal by post will no longer be possible.

Estonian Film ‘The Class’ screening at this years upcoming Sydney Film Festival from June 4 to June 21

The Class (Klass)

Klass - Estonian Film at Sydney Film FestivalEstonian film, The Class (KLASS) will be screened at the 2008 Sydney Film Festival.  The program guide is on the website
http://www.sydneyfilmfestival.org/

Award winner at Karlovy Vary and Warsaw Film Festivals, this confronting feature was inspired by the Columbine High School massacre, but director Raag takes a different approach from Gus Van Sant’s Elephant. The violence in this case is trigged by a brutal bout of bullying, something that started out as a lark but turned nasty. Sixteen-year-old Joosep has been picked on all his life, but when newcomer Kaspar intervenes, he finally thinks he can stop it.

After the two join forces the rest of the class turns against them. Raag workshopped the script with schoolkids and the young cast (all amateurs) and the result has a ring of authenticity which makes it all the more powerful.

Dir Ilmar Raag, Scr Ilmar Raag, Prod Riina Sildos with Vallo Kirs, Pärt Uusberg, Lauri Pedaja

Country Estonia, Language Estonian, Duration 99 mins

Distributor Estonian Film Foundation

Research study on travel to Estonia

0

Tere! I am a Geography Honours student at the University of Sydney currently researching people travelling between Australia and Estonia. This project attempts to document the motivations and experiences of Estonian migrants to Australia, and their descendants, making trips to Estonia.

I am looking for interested persons to complete a brief 10-15 minute survey. This survey is open to any person born in Estonia, or of Estonian ancestry, who has ever lived in Australia. If you have never visited Estonia, you may still complete the survey.

All survey responses will be treated anonymously and with respect. If you wish to complete a survey, please visit the website http://tinyurl.com/2rxq44 or, alternatively, contact me at the address below and I can post a survey form to you. There are also survey forms and a survey box located at Estonia House if that is more convenient for you.

Please contact me if you have any questions. This research is being undertaken with the support of the Estonian Archives in Australia.
