Sydney Eesti Selts esitleb uhkusega: VAT teater etendusega “Gunn, Gunn, vana …

Sydney Eesti majas 7. jaanuaril kl 2 pl.

See paneb mõtlema! Isegi juurdlema. Kuidas elu käib ja millest kõik algas? Et ka temal olid suured plaanid! Unistused?! Vist küll, aga ei mäleta. Tal oli naine ja isegi mõned sõbrad. Tollel ammusel Smokie’ ajal.

Tund algab.

Estonian Society of Sydney proudly presents:

VAT teater performing “Rick, Rick you old …

Sydney Estonian House, January 7th 2017 at 2 PM.

Waiters were important people back in the day, in the Soviet times. Life was all right, there was always a queue behind the door, and loads of dosh around. By the time the Euro arrived Rick was already a grey loser still standing behind his bar.

And then an apprentice is appointed to him! Rick suddenly becomes a teacher! Bloody hell! This makes him think. How does life go and where did it all begin from? Rick also had grand plans. Dreams? Perhaps, who knows. He had a wife and even a few friends. Back when Smokie was hot.

The apprentice is a kind kid who knows nothing about life, and has great hopes. Just like Rick a long time ago. The lesson begins.

2016 GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINEE – BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
2016 ACADEMY AWARDS – BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM (OFFICIAL SELECTION)
WINNER – BEST FILM, BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY- 2016 FINNISH ACADEMY AWARDS

Hailed by audiences at festivals worldwide, Klaus Härö’s elegantly crafted, multi award-winning drama is set in post-war Europe, and movingly depicts the true story of fencing master Endel Nelis, who risked his life to give a group of children something to believe in.

It’s 1953, and Endel (Märt Avandi) is on the run. With his war-time affiliations catching up with him, he eludes the secret police in Leningrad and flees to a remote village. There he tries to keep a low profile by taking a menial job in the sports department at the local school, but his efforts to give the students a proper physical education are quickly frustrated by a lack of resources.

But once Endel – a skilled fencer – locates a few foils in the gym, he starts an after-school club for the kids, who for their part are eager to learn. Yet the strong rapport he builds with his young students only raises the ire of the party-loyalist school principal, who’s already suspicious of his past. Soon it’s impossible for Endel to avoid attention.

Bearing similar themes and emotional impact to Philippe Falardeau’s Monsieur Lazhar, this beautifully acted and stunningly-shot film is a deeply affecting and memorable story of compassion, sacrifice and bravery against the odds.

Sõrve Estonian Singing Workshop 2017

0

Encouraged by the success of the first Estonian Song Workshop “Regilaul” held at Sõrve in 2015, the Sõrve community has agreed to host a second workshop “Eesti Laulupeo Laulud” (Songs from Laulupidu) at Point Wolstoncroft on Lake Macquarie, NSW.

sorve-singing-workshop-2017

Commencing Friday evening 13th January, with a “Welcome icebreaker session”, participants will have the opportunity to learn, rediscover and/or perform, well-known Estonian songs in a relaxed atmosphere. For those who have musical instruments, there will be an opportunity to perform for or join in with other musicians. The workshop proper will begin on Saturday morning after breakfast from 10am – 12noon and will cover, in a hopefully engaging way,

  • Vocal warmups and voice control exercises
  • Holding your own in an SATB choir
  • In depth analysis and rehearsal of a well known song that is always performed at Laulupidu
  • Rehearsal of a “new” song featured at Laulupidu 2014
  • Performance of one or both of these songs to a very friendly and supportive audience

If Estonian music is of interest to you, then join us for the second Estonian Music Workshop from Friday 13th January to Saturday 14th January, 2017 at Sõrve Summer Camp, Point Wolstoncroft, NSW. Accommodation and meals are the only costs you will incur. For more information and to register, please contact the workshop director:

A message from the EP2016 committee

My usual day is not very exciting.
I wake up each morning, and pack the children off to school, then I hope or more like pray my car starts. After this there is always the concern of where I am due to work that day, eventually I can relax with a nice cup of freshly brewed coffee, nothing like the smell of ground coffee beans. Generally I enjoy a ‘Flat White’, occasionally I’ll go with a ‘double shot, Skinny Latté’ but unfortunately I often have to endure the Nescafe caterers’ blend… I’m sure your day is far more interesting than mine, and if you are reading this then you more than likely have something to do with the Australian Estonian community. That already makes you interesting and by whatever means connected to one of Europe’s most fascinating cultures.

The preserved Medieval architecture, the invention of Skype, world wife carrying champions, high tech education in schools, on-line voting, a female president, The Eurovision Song competitions the list goes on. All of you that are reading this article will have a different connection with the ‘Old Country’ whether you have immigrated here in the early 1950’s or more recently, been born to Estonian parents or married the dreaded Estonian. What brings us together and releases us from our day to day existence is the knowledge that we can share this magnificent culture. We all have different backgrounds and friends but the cement that binds us are the wonderful stories and cultural activities that Estonians can bring to us! Nothing better than teaching an Australian how to say ‘Happy New Year’ in Estonian or for that matter ‘Cheers’ in Estonian!

This December we have the great opportunity to take part in and witness a unique event, which has been evolving since the early 1950’s. The Australian Estonian Festival is on every 2 to 3 years and is usually held in Adelaide, Melbourne or Sydney. This year it is Adelaide’s turn and the committee landed a major coup in the fact that Mr Iivo Tuul agreed to act as the chairman, he has brought a wealth of experience and respect to this event. Preparations have been moving along for the last 18 months, so there is a great chance to experience a connection with ‘Eesti’ right here in Adelaide, Australia.

Visitors to Adelaide can expect a great range of events at the Estonian Festival Hub at ‘Kalev on Jeffcott’ or the Adelaide Estonian Hall (Eesti Maja) in North Adelaide, which is 10 minutes from the CBD. Have you heard of the term “Ten Minute Tallinn”? Well in Adelaide nothing is further than 20 minutes away, there is no traffic in Adelaide, most of Australia’s wine comes from here and everything is inexpensive, but keep this quiet, those of us that live here, like it that way.

What are the highlights of this festival?
Well where does one start? The Noorkuu A’Cappella performers, the VAT Theatre, the Magic Strings all from Estonia are the must not miss events. The Arts and Craft Exhibition, the Choir and Folkdancing event, the Song Festival workshop, a sports challenge, the opening night and New Years Eve Ball are also major draw cards. For me it will be sitting in North Adelaide and sharing my stories with you over a quiet cup of coffee or other beverage, enjoying the antics of the famous bar staff at ‘Kalev on Jeffcott’. What outfits will Thomas Sarapuu manage to fit into?

Looking forward to seeing you all in Adelaide from December the 27th until the 31st, for more
information on the individual events and artists, please visit the web page at: http://adelaide.eesti.org.au/event/xxvi-australian-estonian-festival/
