Some fantastic photos of Tallinn by Kaupo Kalda

Kaupo-kalda-estonian-photographer

“Is it realistic to find authentic medieval feeling nowadays? These fabulous pictures provide secret views of one of the best preserved medieval old towns in Europe, Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Tallinn was first mentioned in 1154 by the name Qlwn. Nowadays it is one of the Europe’s best kept secrets. You are more than welcome to take a look and capture this unique city.

I’m better known for my drone photography, but I wanted to capture the unique feel of Tallinn. I captured these photos while enjoying a casual walk around my hometown.”

Risttuules/In the Crosswind (2014)
Eventbrite - The Baltic Film Festival

This film departs from our focus on the comedy genre. The film is based on the letters of an Estonian woman who was deported to a gulag by the Soviets during the Second World War. The movie is both a mournful, but beautiful meditation on the plight of the Baltic people’s under the power of Europe’s greater nations.
The film received critical acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014, for its use of the tableau vivant technique, where still images are seemingly brought to life in front of the camera. The screening at our festival will mark its Australian premier.

Language: Estonian, English subtitles
MA15+: Children under 15 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian for the duration of the film.

Australian Street Artist GUIDO VAN HELTEN in Tallinn

AUSTRALIAN STREET ARTIST GUIDO VAN HELTEN IN TALLINN (ENG) – From Hooligan Hamlet

Taust1

When we heard that the JJ-Street Baltic Session Street Art Jam festival had invited Australian street artist Guido van Helten to Tallinn, we were damn sure we wanted to meet him.

This 28-year-old guy is famous for his large scale portraits. He is originally from Melbourne but during the last years his insane talent has carried him to do projects in the UK, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Italy Ukraine and now, lucky for us, also in Estonia. During his one week stay in Tallinn van Helten created this striking piece of work on the wall of Tartu St 71 building.

We expected something pretty amazing but never in our wildest dreams did we imagine his new mural being inspired by the Estonian national story Kalevipoeg.

Let’s Create a Gift to Celebrate Estonia’s Centenary of Nationhood

0

In 2018 Estonia will celebrate the centenary of her nationhood. The celebration will last for over a calendar year, commencing in April 2017, when 100 years will have passed since Estonia first agreed on unification, and culminating on the 2nd of February, 2020, when 100 years will have passed since the Tartu Peace Treaty was signed.
Estonia wishes to celebrate its birthday with you. This is our celebration and it is up to all of us to make it memorable.

Estonia’s centenary celebrations will take place primarily in Estonia, but we have an opportunity to participate, here in Australia. To mark this occasion, the most important decision for us, is what gift to give. It’s not important how large or small the gift, but that it should come from the heart, and instill positive change.

The Council of Estonian Societies in Australia (Austraalia Eesti Seltside Liit, AESL) invites you to suggest what we here in Australia could present to Estonia as a centenary gift? Our personal input can contribute significantly to how meaningful and special the centenary celebrations are. Suggestions are welcome from individuals and organisations.

For example, we could plant in our capital Canberra a tree/trees, or erect a statue, which would remain in perpetuity as our contribution to commemorate the centenary of Estonian nationhood.

TEEME EESTI VABARIIGI 100.

AESL kutsub teid avaldama mõtteid, mida meie siin kaugel Austraalias saaksime Eestile kinkida?
