A great article about the Estonian seaside resort, Parnu. ( I was just there recently and thoroughly enjoyed it!.)

Tasting the Good Life in Parnu, the Summer Capital of Estonia

When talking beach resort, most of us probably think Greece, Spain, Portugal. The Côte d’Azur. If you’re American, Florida or California. The islands of South-East Asia. The Caribbean.Australia.

Well, Estonians and their Baltic and Nordic neighbours may have a completely different answer for us: they have their own little beach paradise, and it’s called Pärnu.

If you’ve never heard of it before, don’t worry, you don’t need to sign up for a geography Master’s. You’re not alone: neither had I!

In fact, it’s not like I knew anything other than Tallinn when I first started researching for my trip in the Baltics… However, my cousin and I wanted to spend time in at least two different places in Estonia in order to see a little more of the country, and to break up our trip from Riga to Tallinn. So, I googled ‘Estonia highlights’ and ‘Things not to miss in Estonia’, and read about this little beach town called Pärnu that seemed to be located halfway between the two capitals and kept being referred to as ‘the summer capital of Estonia’.

Estonian Movie – In the Crosswind – Melbourne August 11

0

The Estonian Movie, In the Crosswind, is showing as part of the the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF)

in-the-crosswind-movie

From the Festival website:

While Hitler’s Final Solution rolled out across Europe, Stalin was planning his own quiet act of genocide: the mass deportation and execution of more than half-a-million people from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as he rooted out anti-Soviet elements.

Based on the real life diaries and letters of Erna, a young woman separated from her husband in the brutal pogrom and sent to a gulag, In the Crosswind is the remarkable, genre-breaking directorial debut from young gun Martti Helde. Filmed entirely as a sequence of tableaux vivants – literally “living pictures” – the result is a monumental film as photograph, utilising more than 700 actors to create awe-inspiring recreations of Erna’s journey. Four years in the making and shot in lustrous 35mm black and white, In the Crosswind is arthouse filmmaking of the highest order, and marks the emergence of a startling new talent.

  • Tue 11 Aug, 1:30 pm IN THE CROSSWIND at Forum
  • Sun 16 Aug, 1:30 pm IN THE CROSSWIND at Kino 2 (Standby Tickets only)

Ulvi Haagensen (b. Australia) is a visual artist who trained at the City Art Institute and COFA, Sydney. She lives and works in Tallinn, Estonia. Her work explores the grey area between drawing, sculpture and illusion within her chosen subject; the everyday and the domestic. Ulvi has had numerous solo exhibitions and has exhibited in Australia, Estonia, Korea, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Sweden. She has recently completed artist-in-residence programmes in Estonia and Finland.

I am interested in “unimportant work” and professions, whether as unpaid in the home or outside. Cleaning and housework is generally an invisible “art” that is only noticed when it hasn’t been done. Why do we do these jobs day after day – for love, money, a sense of duty or because it is expected of us? Or do we do them to appease, as a form of atonement or out of a sense of guilt.

How does it affect us to do a task repeatedly?

Bel a cappella presents Miserere: Veljo Tormis – “Raua Needmine” on Sunday 19th April at 3pm at Cell Block Theatre Darlinghurst

0

 1_Miserere_A5_email

KULTUURINÄLJASTELE: Austraalia esmaettekanne Veljo Tormis – Raua needmine. Sydney koor Bel a Capella esitab Eesti shamaani rituaalil põhinevat teost, mis räägib, kuidas kurjus raua sisse sai. Kontsert toimub pühapäeval 19.aprillil kell 15.00 Darlinghursti vanas rauast vangikongi teatris. Kindlasti väga eriline kontserdikogemus, eriti sobilik Maestro Tormise 85ndal juubeliaastal.

Miserere pileteid saab osta Bel a cappella’s kodulehelt (www.belacappella.org.au) või telefoni teel 02 9064 1729.  Pileti hind: $45/täiskasvanu; $35/soodus. Uksel piletite arv limiteeritud.

Bel a cappella presents Miserere

One can anticipate three characteristics of a Bel a Cappella concert:

  • the ensemble will be well prepared
  • the program will be well constructed
  • Musical Director Anthony Pasquill will have his heart firmly placed on his sleeve

So said our reviewer from Classikon after our Puer natus est concert at the end of 2014. Our first concert of 2015 promises to be no different, with the choir celebrating 20 years and performing for the first time in Darlinghurst at 3 pm on Sunday 19 April at the beautiful, awe-inspiring Cell Block Theatre at the National Art School – a visually remarkable building and a significant feature of Australia’s colonial and cultural heritage as it was once the Old Darlinghurst Gaol.

Bel a cappella will be presenting music from the 15th century by Johannes Ockeghem with his polyphonic setting of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass (the Missa pro defunctis, or Mass for the dead) through to James MacMillan’s 21st-century take on the text of Psalm 51 (Miserere mei). The psalm (set in Latin) is the same as that set by Allegri: ‘Have mercy upon me, O God, according to they great mercy’.
Contrasting with the simple beauty of the Ockeghem are the Quatre Motets Pour Un Temps De Pénitence by Francis Poulenc which date from 1938‐39, three years after his return to Catholicism following his pilgrimage to visit the famous Black Virgin in Rocamadour (in Western France). The motets are short settings of texts from the Holy Week and show a remarkable balance of emotional restraint and expression along with textural and musical economy.

Bel a cappella will also be performing Australian Premieres by Australian composers: Ave Maria by Anna Jacobs and Pater Noster by David Basden.

Closing the concert is Veljo Tormis‘ frightening, powerful and entrancing Curse Upon Iron. which tells the story about how iron came to be. Driven on by the beating of the shaman drum, the choir chants and shouts lines from the Finnish epos “Kalevada’, mixed with modern statements and the wailing of sirens.

Miserere tickets are available on Bel a cappella’s website (www.belacappella.org.au) or by phone on 02 9064 1729.  Tickets are: $45 for adults; $35 for concessions. A discount of $5 per ticket is available for groups of 10 or more, if pre-booked through the website.  Limited tickets will be available at the door for what is likely to be a sell-out concert.
