forEST Estonian contemporary jewellery exhibition – Sydney Nov 1 to 13

forEST
Estonian contemporary jewellery

Linda al-Assi, Anni Kagovere, Merle Kasonen & Maarja Niinemägi

Estonian artists exhibiting in Australia is rare and yet an exhibition of Estonian contemporary jewellery has found its way to Sydney. How this came about was through the friendship between the Australian artist, Shirley Cho, and Estonian artist, Anni Kagovere. The two artists met in Japan as recipients of the Monbukagakusho (Japanese Government) Scholarship, both completing their MFA degrees at Tokyo University of the Arts.

The idea for the exhibition, forEST, followed after Shirley returned to Australia and prepared for her role as guest curator of PLATFORM at Sydney’s Gaffa Gallery. PLATFORM is a space promoting the work of local and international artists from various arts disciplines and for the program, Shirley invited Anni to form a small group of artists from Estonia to have an exhibition of contemporary jewellery in Australia. The four artists: Linda al-Assi, Anni Kagovere, Merle Kasonen and Maarja Niinemägi previously studied at Estonia Academy of Arts, majoring in jewellery and are actively making and exhibiting their work in Estonia and abroad.

Considering the unusual circumstances as to how this exhibition came about and the rare opportunity for Sydneysiders to see the work of emerging Estonian artists, this exhibition will be one not to be missed!

forEST has been assisted by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.

Merle Kasonen, Linda al-Assi and Maarja Niinemägi are members of the jewellery studio Gram.

Adelaide movie afternoon “George Ots”-18 Nov 2012

0

When

Sunday, November 12th at 2pm

Estonian House Adelaide , 200 Jeffcott St, Adelaide

$5 entry includes tea/coffee and cake

About the movie, “George Ots”:

Peeter Simm’s biopic recounts the life-story of the legendary Estonian opera singer Georg Ots (1920-1975), whose captivating baritone made him a household name throughout the former Soviet Union. Ots’s story is told from his former wife’s point of view in a chronological and linear style, beginning with his first wedding in 1941 and ending with his death in 1975. The film not only relates Ots’s stratospheric rise to fame, but also provides a vivid account of his turbulent marital life and his dealings with the Soviet state. Although it is clear that Simm pursued all of these story lines to provide a complex portrait of the Estonian artist, the three narrative threads unfortunately rarely come together. As a result, it often seems that Ots led three discrete lives: as a self-made man and cultural icon, as a self-styled political dissident, and as a man ultimately unlucky in love. Of these, the most successful narrative line focuses on his personal life.

Georg Ots

People’s Artist of the USSR (21 March 1920, Petrograd, Russian SFSR – 5 September 1975, Tallinn, Estonia) was an Estonian opera singer.Ots was also a welcomed performer in all the major opera houses of the former Soviet Union, being especially popular at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. His repertoire included the roles of: Eugene Onegin, Yeletzky, Escamillo, Renato, Don Giovanni, Papageno, Rigoletto, Iago, Porgy, Figaro, and the title role in Kabalevsky’s Colas Breugnon. Ots sang in Estonian, Russian, Finnish, German, Italian and French, and was fluent in all six languages. Ots’s most famous role, with which he is often identified with, was the leading character in Anton Rubinstein’s opera The Demon.

KiNO! #12 @ Estonian House Sydney on Friday, the 26th of October!

18:30 – 19:00
‘6 tundi’ (6 Hours) – [G] 2005

Genre: Documentary

When the summer months arrive in Tallinn, thousands of people on board cruise ships arrive in the Port of Tallinn to see the sights on offer. Most of them American.
Generally they will stay in Tallinn for only six hours.
Awaiting their arrival in the Port are infinite bus drivers, guides and tour organisers. With cruise passes in hand, major attractions, eating and drinking are to be had, with most leaving with full bellies and pleasant memories. But Tallinn is just another stop on their long journey.
After a long days sight-seeing the tourists are tired and the stress of the day fades away from the local tour operators.
What do the tour guides show?
In fact; what did they talk about?
Who are the people that provide the service for “same-day” tourists?
And who are the tourists???

Director: Rein Kotov

Staring: Tourists

19:00 – 19:30
A short intermission where you can grab some finger food and a drink from the bar.

‘karu süda’ (The Heart of the Bear) – [R] 2001

WARNING: SOME FRONTAL NUDITY AND SEX SCENES.

Genre: Drama

Time and a reliable courier will hopefully deliver this special copy direct from the director. As we understand it, this is the first dvd sub-titled copy made especially for KiNO! @ Estonian House Sydney. We pull out all the stops for you people 🙂

This is the story of a young Estonian man who goes to the Siberian Taiga to live as a hunter in a remote forest hut. He hopes to find his true self far from civilisation.
The natives he encounters introduce him to the myths of the north and the ways of the wild.
Along the way he will encounter the most mysterious creature of all – the woman! The first: a young village teacher who wants to be a good wife to him. The second: a wild and untameable native. Others will try and fail along the way.
When an accident occurs one day out in the wilds, he burdens himself with a guilt he feels he can never recover from. However, the natives he befriends are forgiving and he is given a chance of finding his inner balance.
A romantic drama with mythical elements and breathtaking landscapes.

For those of you who caught Lennart Meris film ‘Dances to the Milky Way’ a few KiNO!’s ago, you would have had the chance to see the funeral of the bear, a relevant reference point in this film ‘karu süda’.

Director: Arvo Iho

Stars: Rain Simmul, Dinara Drukarova and Ilyana Pavlova
