Estonians don’t need multiple documents to prove their identity — should Australia follow their lead?

Tallinn Estonia

ABC News Australia recently published an interesting article on the Estonian digital identity system.

After Australia’s recent Optus and Medibank hacks, cyber security experts are looking at more secure ways for Australians to prove who they are.
Estonia’s eID allows its citizens to vote online, submit tax claims, check health records, organise prescriptions and use digital signatures, all with a single ID and secret pin number.

Estonian Improv in Gibberish

Impro theater is a form of live theater in which the plot, characters, and dialogue of a scene are created in front of the audience – it is acting without a script.

“Kujutluse võim ehk KOOMILISTE SKETŠIDE ÕHTU” is a performance with a short play of improvisational theater – short improvised sketches in which actors get into unexpected situations. You can see captivating scenes, humorous characters, hit songs, etc. created on the spot.

Improteater on üle maailma palavalt armastatud teatrivorm, kus kõik sünnib publiku silme all.

.

Improteatri töötuba on tõestus sellest, et enesearendamine saab olla mänguline ja võib pakkuda palju nalja. Töötoa keskkond on pingevaba ja turvaline. Koht kus saab end vabaks lasta ning välja elada. Lõbusate harjutuste ja grupimängudega käivitub fantaasialend, areneb tähelepanu, meeskonnatöö ja reaktsioonikiirus.

Naitlejate tutvustus –

Oleme näitlejad, Maarius Pärn ja Rauno Kaibiainen Improteater IMPEERIUM liikmed ja asutajad. Oleme koos publikut rõõmustanud enam kui 17 aastat. Esimesed ühised lavakogemused pärinevad aastast 2005 mil verivärskete TÜ Viljandi Kultuuriakadeemia näitlejatudengitena samale kursusesel õppima asusime. Sealt edasi ristusid teed juba sujuvalt  improteatriga ning antud distsipliinist vaimustununa oleme duona  läbinud improteatri meistriklasse mitmete rahvusvaheliselt tunnustatud õppejõudude valvsate pilkude all.

Intergenerational Play Day at the Sydney Estonian House

0

October 20 was a special day at the Sydney Estonian House. The Estonian Children’s Playgroup in Sydney (Sydney Mudilasring) invited the older members of the Estonian community to play together. Our aim was to connect the younger and older generations of Estonians to spread joy, learn from each other and promote Estonian language and culture.

There was a warm atmosphere and lots of smiles and laughter as we sang Estonian children’s songs, read books and played together. Even the oldest participants stepped up and danced in a circle to the beloved Estonian song “Kes aias”. After warming up to the new faces, the children were eager to share toys and show books to their new playmates. Later, coffee/milk and a home-baked apple cake revived the tired players giving way to a friendly chat in Estonian. The mums were happy to give the children an opportunity to connect with older people, since many of them are far away from their grandparents. The older generation expressed their gratitude for our effort in continuing the Estonian culture and language in Australia being happy to see a new generation of Estonians. Everybody went home with positive emotions and anticipation for our next meeting.

We are planning to organise similar events again at the Sydney Estonian House. The next meeting will be on November 17 at 10.30 am. If you need more information,

Thanks to everybody who helped to make this event happen: the author of the idea Merike Viigisalu, our teacher Elen Ellervee, Estonian Cultural Foundation Australia (ECFA) for supporting our work and finally everybody who participated.

RE-INDEPENDENCE DAY GREETING from AESL PRESIDENT 20 AUGUST 2022

0

FELLOW ESTONIANS, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES

Freedom is something many peoples across the world desire – freedom to think what they like, freedom to say what they think; the freedom to do what we want, and the freedom to decide how we live. Most essential to this is the freedom to be able to participate in a free society, where we can have a say in how the country is run.

Estonia spent many centuries under the rule of other countries. We went thru much soul-searching during the 19th century, and fought to gain independence and recognition as a sovereign state early in the 20th century.

In 1940, the Soviet Union took control of Estonia, along with the other Baltic states of Latvia and Lithuania. Despite passive genocide by the soviets and bans on self-expression, our culture was strong within our people, and our Song Festivals help maintain our own identity.

An enormous stage, holding 15,000 singers, was built on a hillside above the harbor. In September 1988, 300,000 Estonians, nearly one-fourth of the country’s population, assembled on and in front of the Tallinn stage. They sang patriotic songs, raised the banned Estonian flag and demanded independence, leading to sustained protests in what became known as the “Singing Revolution.

Combining with Latvia and Lithuania in 1990, we formed the Baltic Way – a human chain of 2 million people, extending across all three countries. A strong expression showing that we all wanted our freedom.

On August 20, 1991, Estonia, called the “singing nation,” successfully declared its independence as the Republic of Estonia. This is what we now celebrate every year.

As time passes, it becomes too easy to just accept our freedom, and forget the struggles our predecessors have undertaken.

We need to cherish this day!

Countries like Australia take freedom for granted, as they have grown up in this way of life. But as we have seen in 2022 with the Ukraine, freedom may not be forever. We also see China making threats about Taiwan, and hear of other conflicts around the world.
I now ask each of you to think about what Estonia’s re-independence means to the country, and how does this effect you.
How do you personally see your self-identity as an Estonian.

And while we look to celebrate Estonia’s re-independence, we need to also respect and cherish the culture that we have sustained to give us our identity. Our young people come together around the world to enjoy our singing, our dancing, our foods, our language, and other cultural traditions. We need to maintain these, and pass them on to the newer generations. We need to create and foster the situations which promote all of these, and hand down the knowledge and skills, just as the indigenous peoples in many countries have maintained their own cultures.

On behalf of the Council of Estonian Societies in Australia (AESL), I wish you all the best for this memorable day.

Happy Re-Independence Day!

Long live Estonia! Elagu Eesti!

LUGUPEETUD KAASMAALASED JA SÕBRAD

Vabadus on asi, mida ihaldavad paljud rahvad üle maailma – vabadus mõelda mis neile meeldib, vabadus öelda mida nad arvavad; vabadus teha seda mida tahame, ja vabadus otsustada kuidas me elame. Selle jaoks on kõige olulisem vabadus osaleda vabas ühiskonnas, kus saame riigi juhtimises osa võtta.

Eesti veetis palju sajandeid teiste riikide võimu all.

Sadama kohale mäenõlvale ehitati tohutu lava, mis mahutas 15 000 lauljat. Septembris 1988 kogunes Tallinna lavale 300 000 eestlast, ehk ligi neljandik riigi elanikkonnast.

Seda me nüüd igal aastal tähistame.

Aja möödudes muutub liiga lihtsaks lihtsalt aktsepteerida oma vabadust ja unustada meie eelkäijate võitlused.

Peame seda päeva kalliks pidama!

Riigid nagu Austraalia peavad vabadust enesestmõistetavaks, kuna nad on sellise eluviisiga üles kasvanud.

Elagu Eesti!

THANK YOU | AITÄH Estonian Festival 2022 – Eesti Päevad XXVIII

0

For the 28th time, we gathered across Australia to celebrate everything that is Estonian – the Festival Eesti Päevad 2022 took place in Melbourne.

Over the four Easter days, we celebrated as follows – the Forest Day, Culture Day, Party Day, Folk Day.

On April 15, we gathered at Kilmore Forest near Melbourne. Opening of the festival ceremony was held. There was singing, dancing, games, competitions, a marketplace was open and children’s activities took place. We enjoyed seljanka soup, meat pirukad, drinks from eesti bar, we enjoyed the performance of the Estonian musician as well as took in the smell of burning fire from the campfire site.

On the morning of April 16, Melbourne opened the doors of the Estonian House for a tour. Chess tournament also started. Then an exhibition of handicrafts opened, followed by literature event. The café was open throughout the day so as not to go hungry for evening events – stand up comedy and concerts of three Estonian bands, including nublu & Gameboy Tetris – the number one performer in Estonia.

On the 17th of April, no matter how long we spent the previous night in the bar of the Estonian House, we gathered for business – the passion mission, the future of Estonian houses, language discussions, the meeting of the board of AESL. An axe competition took place at a different venue, followed by a restaurant night at the Melbourne Zoo.

On April 18, a folk festival with performing groups from all over Australia, took place over the four hours, at a BBQ table, and last purchases were made from eesti bar, from eesti handicraft exhibition. Folk costumes were photographed to create a digital archive. The closing ceremony handed over the Eesti Päevad flag to Adelaide.

A total of twenty plus events or activities took place. There was a choice for every age group, for every taste. All cities, many talanted people, kind sponsors took part in the organization of the Eesti Päevad Festival.  Even when you read about the Kilmore Forest day – there were around ten different teams leading the various events. There was great interest, participation and high energy charge in every venture!

Eesti Päevad board says big thank you to all who assisted in making the festival happen and who participated!   The THANK YOU letter is for all!

AITÄH & THANK YOU!

Dear friends!

We made it! The XXVVIII Eesti Päevad 2022 Festival in Melbourne was a success and we hope you all enjoyed the four days as much as we did!

We would like to thank everyone who made this festival possible and who have been supporting us every step of the way!

With the financial support of our sponsors and funding bodies, we were able to offer a variety of events, include a number of performances and lower the ticket prices to make the festival accessible for a larger audience. With the wonderful contribution of all the artists and creators, musicians and performers, dance groups and choirs, we were able to witness so much talent, creativity and joy and tell our stories through a range of creative arts forms. The amount of diverse skills, knowledge and expertise that we can find amongst the community members is positively overwhelming and encouraging.

It is of great importance for our community to be recognised and valued in a multicultural Australia and to see that so many organisations, businesses and individuals are continuously willing to offer their support to the ongoing traditions of the Estonian diaspora in Australia. We would like to say our thank you, once again, to the Victorian Government, Embassy of Estonia in Canberra, Estonian World Council, Estonian Cultural Foundation in Australia and Aero Travel for your support and extend our gratitude to the Estonian House Co-operative for providing us a wonderful venue to gather at and to Siiri Metsar for working day and night behind the sound equipment to offer us a professional and enjoyable experience for each event.

Most importantly, we would like to thank everyone who took their time to get involved in one way or another, whether on stage or behind the scenes, in person or online. We wouldn’t have been able to do this without the help of each individual who invested their energy and resources to travel to Melbourne or supported our small organising team prior to the festival.

A community can only exist and stay alive with a passionate mindset, ambition and commitment.

We believe that during the four days, we were able to remind ourselves of what it means to be Estonian, experienced the rich culture that we share and were able to offer an insight into the beauty of the long lived and loved tradition to our family and friends.

Let us now start working together to support Adelaide in their adventure to organise the 2024 Eesti Päevad! Let us stay strong as a community, keep motivated and inspired and we will be able to look forward to another wonderful reunion and an enjoyable time together in Adelaide in two years’ time!

With our deepest gratitude,

Festival toimus neljal lihavõtte päeval, nimede all – Metsa päev, Kultuuripäev, Pidupäev, Rahvapidu.

15ndal Aprillil saabuti Kilmore metsa Melbourne lähistel. Istuti mättale mängimaie nii nagu kuldsetel aegadel. Toimus Festivali avatseremoonia. Üle varjulise metsaplatsi kõlas eesti muusika, laul, tants, võistlused, mängud, avatud oli turuplats ning toimusid laste tegevused. Sõime seljanka suppi, lihapirukaid, jooke ostsime eesti baarist, eesti muusiku esinemist nautisime, põleva lõkkehalu lõhna lõkkeplatsil kuni hommikuni.

16ndal Aprilli hommikul avas Melbourne Eesti Maja uksed ekskurssiooniks.

Eesti Päevade korralduses osalesid eri linnad, paljud inimesed, lahked sponsorid – infoks soovitame tutvuda Eesti Päevade albumiga. Osalemist saatis igal päeval, igal ettevõtmisel suur huvi ja kõrge energialaeng! Eesti Päevade juhatus tänab kõiki kaasaaitajaid, kaasalööjaid,  kaasatulijaid! Juuresolev TÄNUKIRI on kõigile!
