Victory Day | Võidupüha – June 23

0

In Australia, we assume that Freedom is a right, and something that we are all entitled to. But we need to remember that there is a price for this freedom.

Võidupüha or Victory Day is a public holiday in Estonia, which has been celebrated on June 23rd every year since 1934.

The date recalls the victory in the 1919 Battle of Võnnu (near Cēsis, Latvia) of the Estonian military forces and their allies over German forces who sought to re-assert Baltic-German control over the region.

The battle was part of the 1918-1920 Estonian War of Independence, where the main adversary of the newly independent Estonia was Communist Russia.

Today, Võidupüha also marks the contributions of all Estonians in their fight to regain and retain their independence over the past century.

This year we need to take special note of this day and remember our struggles.

The Baltic nations had assumed that since they had regained their independence in 1991, and subsequently joined the European Union and NATO, their future was fairly secure. However, we now have new concerns for our safety and our future.

Many of us are too young to have known the struggles and hardships that our predecessors had to undergo. It is so difficult for us to comprehend any of this. And to the younger generations, it seems so impossible.

However, in 2022, we see Ukraine being invaded by Putin’s Russia, the successor of the soviet union. We see Ukraine fighting a war, which many see as a fight for all of Europe. We see the way the Russians are raping the country and its people, destroying buildings wantonly, no regard for the families or civilians.

We can speculate about Putin’s ultimate goals. But the bottom line is that he has started a war and has invaded a sovereign country, which was recognised as such by the rest of the world.

The images we see on tv, in social media, or wherever, should remind us of what our own forebears had to endure.

It also should remind us that we must stay ever vigilant, and never rest too easy.

So, fellow Estonians, families and their descendants, please celebrate the day, but also look at the world today and respect the struggles of those who fought for our freedom.

Estonian celebration of June 23 is ceremonially tied to the following Midsummer Day celebrations on June 24. According to Estonian laws, the state flags are not to be lowered during the night between the days.

***
Kuid, me peame meeles pidama, et sellel vabadusel on suur hind.
Võidupüha on Eestis riigipüha, mida tähistatakse igal aastal 23. juunil alates 1934. aastast.

AESL DONATIONS DRIVE for JAANIPÄEV 2022

0

Dear Estonians and friends,

AESL sends greetings to all who celebrate solstice at this time of year, by coming together in person or in their hearts.

Many gather by bonfire to celebrate the Northern Midsummer as our forefathers did, and appropriate it is in cold winter of 2022 in Australia! It is the time again to let our traditions and stories bring us together, and to share the experience with our youngest.

Recently held Eesti Päevad Festival in Melbourne, over Easter 2022, proved once again how much we value our culture and what we are ready to overcome to keep that fire burning.

AESL board looks after the bank account for Eesti Päevad. Five thousand dollars is usually the “seed money” to get the organising of festival started. The rest is in festival organisers hands.

Total amount on this account is under 70 thousand dollars. This is not collected by Donations Drives but inherited long time ago. The fund diminishes with every Eesti Päevad. To put this amount in perspective, although the current Eesti Päevad did very well having a loss of around
two thousand dollars, the previous Eesti Päevad run a loss close to forty thousand.

This is where the current Donations Drive comes in.

We know you love to celebrate Jaanipäev, to participate the next Eesti Päevad in Adelaide, and to go to many events in between. For this we need the people who give their time and best efforts on a daily basis, and they need money to keep the ball rolling by doing the great job for our society.

AESL brings the funds together and supports Estonian culture and the traditional events and enterprises all over Australia.

Thank you for considering AESL invitation for donations. If you can be part of this drive, please
do so.
