This sees a new structure, with the Board being comprised of delegates from each state/territory, plus four independent persons.

Sydney Estonian artist finalist in Macquarie Emerging Art Prize

0
Lachlan Bell Memento mori (Dalgety), 2020

Lachlan Bell is an active member of the Sydney Estonian community and is involved across Sydney Eesti Selts, Virmalised and Sõrve Summer Camp. Lachlan is one of 10 finalists currently exhibiting work in the 2021 Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize. In its 10th year, the Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize supports and recognises a new generation of Australian visual artists. Artists in the early stage of their careers are invited to enter an original work (or series) reflecting the theme of the Macquarie Group Collection, ’The Land and Its Pscyhe’. This collection has been supporting emerging Australian artists for more than 30 years.

Submitting two photographic prints from his 2020 Snowmelt series, ‘Memento Mori (Dalgety)’ and ‘Pushing Up Burr-daisies (Boloco)’, these images were taken on Ngarigo country around Dalgety in the Snowy Mountains region, Southern NSW. The images reflect on the ephemerality of human presence within a foreboding and temperamental landscape and question the evolving nature of our relationships with fraught history, colonial monuments and contested legacies. Felicity Fenner, Chair of City of Sydney’s Public Art Advisory Panel and curatorial consultant to Macquarie Group, writes “These photographs by Lachlan Bell are set in regional Australia. The forgotten graves in a country churchyard, and the rusting petrol bowsers superfluous in a modern world, stand like sentries protecting memories embedded in the landscapes of lives past.”

Lachlan Bell’s 2020 photograph ‘Memento Mori (Dalgety)’ has been acquired by the Macquarie Group Collection and will sit alongside works of acclaimed artists such as Ben Quilty, Emily Kane Kngwarreye, Juan Ford, Joan Ross, Mabel Juli, Reg Mombassa, Shaun Gladwell, Janet Laurence to name a few. Director of the Macquarie Group Collection, Helen Burton, said: “Congratulations to our winners. The exceptional quality of the finalists’ works reflects the depth of talent to be found among Australia’s next generation of visual artists. This year, we received a record number of submissions and I’d like to congratulate everyone who entered the Prize. Thankyou for sharing your unique talent.”

Official press release for the Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize:

The works submitted by Lachlan and the other 9 finalists are available to purchase and view in the online exhibition. A limited run of 6 prints is being made for Lachlan’s two photographs, and for any inquiries, questions or potential commissions please contact him via email: lachlan.bell@eesti.org.au

Lachlan is also currently a Finalist in the Blacktown City Art Prize and the UNSW Kudos Gallery Emerging Artist + Designer Prize, and is currently working as a research assistant for UNSW Lecturer Clare Milledge for the upcoming 2022 Sydney Biennale.

Lachlan’s work is also visible on his website: L[C]Bell and on Instagram: @loch.man

virtual forum for Estonians across the globe

It is our pleasure to invite you to our virtual forum for Estonians across the globe. The event will be held on 27 November at 4 p.m. (UTC/GMT+2) and can be followed in Estonian, English or Russian. Please feel free to share this information with your contacts in the Estonian community of your country (information in Estonian below).

The forum includes discussions about our diaspora communities and the presentation of the preliminary results of the diaspora survey. We’ll try to find answers for several questions: Why do many Estonians live abroad? How does Estonia support their efforts to maintain and strengthen their Estonian identity? How can we together make Estonia greater?

The President of Estonia Alar Karis will share his thoughts with Estonians across the globe. Between the discussions, the Estonians living in the United States, Sweden and Czech Republic will join us. Musical entertainment is provided by London-born Kymbali Williams, whose Estonian roots and love for Estonia brought her to live and work in Estonia.

Seekordsel foorumil saab osa mitmest arutelust.

Blini Pancake Cafe – an Estonian owned cafe in Perth

0
Blini Pancake Cafe Perth

An Estonian couple have opened a pancake cafe in Perth. Their cafe and pancake recipe was recently featured on the SBS website.

A flip of a pancake would end up changing the lives of Estonian couple, Tanel Akolov and Anett Kamara. The couple migrated to Perth in 2014 after falling in love with the Western Australian city while they were backpacking around the country. After leaving their hometown of Jüri in northern Estonia, it became the couple’s dream to bring a taste of the Baltic region to their new home by opening Blini Pancake Cafe in the inner suburb of Victoria Park in 2020.

Read the whole story, and (get the recipe!) on the SBS website: Estonian pancakes are the best of both worlds

Opening Hours: open daily from 8am to 2pm and 6pm to 8pm.

Senator the Hon Marise Payne announce the next Ambassador to Estonia

0
Genevieve Clune, Ambassador-Designate of Australia to Estonia

Ambassador to Estonia

Media release

19 October 2021

Today I announce the appointment of Dr Genevieve Clune as Australia’s next Ambassador to Estonia.

Australia and Estonia enjoy a long friendship. This year we celebrate 30 years since Estonia’s independence and the formal establishment of diplomatic relations.

Our two nations are committed to democracy, the global rules-based order and open trade.

We cooperate on an expanding multilateral agenda, including digital transformation, innovation, cyber-security and through Australia’s defence cooperation with NATO.

Our Embassy in Tallinn continues to operate as a ‘pop-up post’, an innovative approach to extending Australia’s diplomatic network. It will operate in Tallinn at intervals to support Australia’s involvement in high-level events and other engagement opportunities, while maintaining a virtual presence at other times.

Dr Clune is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). She has previously served overseas as Counsellor in Bangkok and Second Secretary in Paris, with short-term missions in New Delhi, Warsaw, Nairobi and Baghdad. In Canberra she has served in a range of policy roles including as an Adviser in the Office of the Foreign Minister.

Dr Clune holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Archaeology); and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the University of Western Australia.

I thank former Ambassador Kerin Ayyalaraju for her contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Estonia since 2018.
