Joint Baltic Committee of NSW Commemoration Concert in Sydney- 14 June 2021

0

The President and Members of The Joint Baltic Committee of NSW request the pleasure of your company at the Commemoration Concert to be held on the 80th Anniversary of the first mass deportations of the Baltic people in June 1941.

Monday, 14th June 2021 at 2pm

Latvian Centre
32 Parnell Street, Strathfield
NSW 2135

Guest speakers

Honorary Consuls of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

Following the concert you are invited to stay for refreshments

Regaining their independence in August 1991, the Baltic countries are now members of the UN, the NATO alliance and the European Union. 2021 marks over 100 years since the declarations of independence from Russia by the three Baltic States in 1918.

As well as commemorating the deportations, the occasion serves to remind us all that evil regimes still exist. Indeed, Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 poses grave concerns that Russia may seek to re-occupy the Baltic States on the pretext of “protecting” the Russian-speaking populations in the respective regions.

Dear Estonians and Estonian Organisations in Australia,

In 2021 we unite in Australia, with Estonia and with Estonians all around the world, for two major occasions and milestones.

On the 14 June 2021 we commemorate 80 years since deportation that took place in 1941, a year after the occupation and annexation of the Baltic States.

14 juuni on Eestis on nimetatud Leinapäevaks, mil mälestatakse 1941. aasta 14. juuni küüditamise ohvreid ning meenutatakse sündmusi, mis leidsid aset 80 aastat tagasi.

On the 20 August 2021 we celebrate 30 years of restoration of independence, as in 1991 with the juridical continuation of the Republic of Estonia established in 1918 and occupied in 1940, it was declared that the occupation of the Republic of Estonia by the Soviet Union on 17 June 1940 did not de jure interrupt the existence of the Republic of Estonia.

Sel aastal möödub 30 aastat Eesti Vabariigi de facto taastamisest 20. augustil 1991. Otsust taastada 1918. aastal sündinud Eesti Vabariik, tähistatakse 20. augustil Eesti taasiseseisvumispäevana.

Both these round-number events will be remembered by all Estonians, by all Estonian organisations in Australia and around the world.

Ongoing work by AESL in 2021 is organising Eesti Paevad Festival for Easter 2022.

For the first time we have a different approach – we are involving Estonian organisations all over Australia rather than being city centred. Not all was bad that came from Covid year of 2020 – we are now connected in more ways, and separation has brought us closer together. We are also more eager to physically get together once again, and more willing to give, and do our part to get there.

In Memoriam – Aino Victoria Krumins (nee Lukats)

0

Aino Victoria Krumins (nee Lukats) of Owhiro Bay – died peacefully on 4th May 2021 with her daughter by her side at Wellington Hospital, aged 85 years.

Dear mother and mother-in-law of Andra & Alex, wife of Gundi, grandmother of Tali (grandmother-in-law of Mahmoud), grandmother of Yossi.

Aino’s life was a mosaic of good times, hardships, glorious scenery and truly wonderful friendships.

She was born Aino Viktoria Lukats at around midnight 28th February 1936 in Tallinn, Estonia to Alma and Jakob Lukats.

Following her unplanned childhood immigration from Estonia to New Zealand, she embraced wholeheartedly the mixed nationalities of our New Zealand community and was welcomed in turn.

Wellington’s South Coast and the Wanganui River (particularly through the Canoe Camping Ltd. era) were especially close to her heart. She spent many years paddling various waters in her favourite canoes and kayaks.
Aino was a dedicated teacher, mentor and inspiration to young people.
She shared joy, skills and enthusiasm for academics, languages, music, guitar/ukulele, waterpolo, camping and kayaking/canoeing (amongst other passions).

Her welcoming cup of tea, characterful stories, life-lessons and unique company are already sorely missed by many.

An informal wake/memorial gathering to celebrate Aino’s life will be held at 134 Owhiro Bay Parade, Owhiro Bay, Wellington 12-3pm Saturday 8th May.

Remembrances may be left in Aino’s tribute book at In Memory of Aino Victoria Krumins or posted c/- PO Box 14-366, Kilbirnie 6241.

Special thanks to the staff of Wellington Hospital for their gentle care and kind support.

EACCI - Dr Matthew Sorrell

This session is part of the EACCI new peer-to-peer series that focuses on sharing the expertise of their members

Since 2015, the University of Adelaide and the Tallinn University of Technology have collaborated in mutual study tours in cyber security. In this talk, Dr Matthew Sorell will explain how the collaboration got started, what the study tours do in Tallinn and Adelaide, and why this program is so valuable for both Australian and Estonian students.

Dr Matthew Sorell is senior lecturer in telecommunications, multimedia and digital forensic science at the University of Adelaide, and Adjunct Professor of Digital Forensics at the Tallinn University of Technology. A true Eestiphile, he would normally be in Tallinn three times a year. Dr Sorell is also a member of the INTERPOL Digital Forensics Experts Group, Scientific Adviser to FORMOBILE, an EU-funded research project on mobile phone forensics standardisation, an early e-Resident and, despite no known Estonian heritage, an active supporter of the South Australian Estonian community.

Estonians to debut in the world’s biggest solar car race

0

Solaride, Estonia’s first entry to the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia, readies its solar vehicle for a high-stake international race, due to take place in 2023.

The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is one of the world’s most preeminent competitions for innovative solar-power vehicles. Held in Australia every two years since 1987, it welcomes entries from international teams spanning the globe, which then compete on a course across 3,000 kilometres (1,864 miles) of Outback, from Darwin in the north to Adelaide in the south.

Solaride, Estonia’s first entry to the challenge, was supposed to compete in the race this summer, but travel restrictions have forced organisers to delay the event until summer 2023. However, that bought Estonia’s all-volunteer team time not only to build a first-generation vehicle, but to consider the development of a second-generation car for the 2023 race.

Fundraising activities also continue, with the aim of not only developing a competitive solar-powered vehicle, but to develop Estonia’s engineering expertise across the country.
